Green Schools

The Green Schools Committee in our school has greatly expanded with further interest and membership from all years in the school. We are heading for our third Green Flag for “Water Conservation”.
We began the year off with a raffle, with the prize being a brand new mountain bike. From the raffle, we raised much needed money, a total of €200. We used this money to buy signs to educate students around the school on saving water and plan to use the rest to upgrade taps in the school, to sensor, thus saving waste water when taps are left on.
To reduce the waste water from toilets we placed plastic bottles in the cisterns which reduced the number of litres used per flush from nine to six. This has reduced the water used in our school from 13500 to 9000 litres, saving 4500 litres of water per day.
The Green Schools Committee have run poster and crossword competitions throughout the year. The prizes for these competitions were vouchers for Liffey Valley. These were run to raise awareness of both the committee and our work on water conservation in the school.
Thanks to Mr Kiely and all the staff of the school who have worked tirelessly on renewing our Green Flag, and hopefully we can welcome our third Green Flag to the school flagpole this week. Don’t forget:
“Turn off water to save a quarter”
